(Botanical) name: Cyperus alopecuroides Rottb. ( = Juncellus alopecuroides C.
B. Cl., Chlorocyperus alopecuroides (Rottb.) Grossh.). Family: Cyperaceae. Common
name: Cyperus, Samaar helw, Koosh, Serakoan asla, ‘Aloob, ‘Oloob, ‘Aloob
es-sultaan. Origin:

description: CYPERACEAE A. Juss. : Flowers bisexual, nut
lying bare inside the glume. Leaves not prickly-serrated. Plants glabrous.
Spikelets several in a terminal, crowded head. Head supported by 3 or more
leaves. CYPERUS. Spikelets flat with 2-ranked glumes. CYPERUS L. Spikelets
flat with 2-ranked glumes, either spicate or umbelled. Spikes or umbels
arranged in a large compound umbel, rarely the whole inflorescence consisting
of but a single spike of spikelets or a head of spikelets. Stigmas 3, nut
trigonous ; perianth absent. Spikelets
in spikes. Spikes cylindrical in outline, consisting of many spikelets.
Spikelets oblong-lanceolate, approximate. Spikelets 2-3 mm. broad, umbel-rays
up to 18 cm. long. CYPERUS ALOPECUROIDES. Rottb. (= Juncellus alopecuroides
C. B. Cl., Chlorocyperus alopecuroides (Rottb.) Grossh.) : Differs from
preceding mainly by longer umbel-rays, up to 18 cm. broader spikelets, 2-3
mm., hardly keeled glumes with incurved margins. Stamens and Stigmas normally
2, nut plano-convex (in preceding 3 and nut trigonous). Source:
